Surgical Access for Everyone

A program that provides access to badly needed surgical procedures for people in Kenya who otherwise could not afford the healthcare they need. SAFE is a partnership with Maua Methodist Hospital (MMH) in Maua, Kenya, the African Mission Healthcare (AMH) based in the US and Kenya and Friends Of Maua Hospital (FOMH) a US organization dedicated to supporting the life changing mission of Maua Methodist Hospital.

AMH has helped manage over 4,000 surgical procedures with partner mission hospitals in East Africa. The AMH methodology is a framework for specific surgical procedures whereby a partnering hospital can deliver the services to the patient. AMH coordinates the pre and postoperative follow up in conjunction with the surgical staff of the hospital and the hospital’s SAFE representative. The hospital and AMH will have already determined the costs, quality of care for desired outcomes and the predetermined reimbursement amounts for the hospital, based on the hospital’s cost structure.

With the SAFE Program, the four-way partnership between the patient, MMH, AMH and FOMH is a ground-breaking approach to providing desperately needed surgeries to “the least of God’s children” in Kenya.

So why is SAFE the most effective way to help qualified patients in need?

  • It not only benefits the patient, it helps create “good will” in the community for MMH.

  • It assists MMH in improving its effectiveness in specific surgical areas by creating carefully controlled quality and procedures that are repeatable.

  • It enables MMH to more effectively serve the medical needs of the Maua Catchment Area.

  • It helps create financial sustainability for MMH’s overall operations by accurately costing surgical procedures for which it is fully reimbursed.

Sample surgeries and their costs (reimbursement amounts to MMH) are:

  • SIGN NAIL System repair for major bone fractures- $1,026

  • Tendon repair- $657

  • A mother’s delivery by C-Section- $485

For donors, we get the blessing of knowing 100% of our gifts are going to change lives with our “neighbors” in Kenya. Plus, we will receive the reports about the actual patient stories and how MMH and the SAFE Program and YOUR donation affected their lives.
