PROJECTS

There are many different types of projects for a team to participate in. They are a great way for a team to immerse themselves into the Kenyan culture and the chance to develop long-lasting relationships with our neighbors in Kenya. The costs and types of projects vary, so you can customize to fit a team.

WORK ON THE HOSPITAL COMPOUND

Each team is asked to work on a designated project on the hospital compound. These generally consist of painting, or minor construction. Each team brings $1000-3000 to cover these costs, depending on size of team. These projects will vary from year to year and from team to team.

AIDS ORPHAN HOME

Join Charles and his crew to build a new home to replace a home like you see pictured on the left. One home costs $3000 US to build. The $3000 covers the building supplies, gutters, a water storage tank, salary for the Kenyan workers, latrine, basic beds/blankets for the family, two medicated mosquito nets, school fees and health insurance for the family for one year. Teams build only one AIDS Orphans home during their time in Maua, but they can contribute to the building fund so another family will have a home.

school health programs

Teams will visit one school which will be near the medical camp. Students are given the deworming pills, suckers and toothbrushes if available. The cost for deworming tablets for the school children is $200, plus cost to bring about 1500 suckers. The team donates school supplies too.

MEDICAL CAMPS

Teams can request the hospital set up a one-day Medical Camp. This will include travel to an outlying clinic site for a full day of “triage” and basic health care in villages 30-45 minutes away. The team will need to bring $500 to cover transport for the hospital team, Kenyan doctors and nurses, interpreters, testing kits etc. The Medical camp is now designed to test for TB, HIV/AIDS, Blood Pressure and Diabetes. Teams will assist with basic eye testing, taking blood pressure, gathering weights, demonstrating proper hygiene and brushing teeth.

Kitchen Gardens

Kitchen gardens are being started at schools and teams can include this project when visiting schools to deworm the children or donate money to buy supplies, hire someone to demonstrate and encourage schools to raise their own vegetables for their noon meal. Students then share what they have learned with their families and grow small gardens in gunny bags near their own homes. $15 per home.
